3Floyds Brew Pub Review
3Floyds Brew pub…. Hmmm, how to put it best, great beer – overconfident attitude. That’s not to say that I dislike going there, just that the beer is the main attraction.
Ambiance
Their space is decorated with various forms of art, and filled with differing types of music, mostly metal and off the beaten path stuff. They project old, cult-classic type movies on a wall. When you go there and sit, don’t face the wall with the movie or you’ll get sucked into it and end up missing most of your conversation.
The uniform for the servers and bar-staff seems to be ‘tattoo’. Which is not a bad thing, I myself am tattooed, and if that’s the niche they are trying to fill, who the hell am I to try and tell them ‘No’.
Food
Maybe I’m just stuck in the old ways of 3Floyds, but the food selection/quality used to be better. Remember this is just my opinion, yours may vary. They used to have this sauce that was a combination of mayonnaise and horse-radish that went so well with their fries it makes me salivate just thinking about it. They have changed the type of fries they use, and no longer offer their amazing sauces, with the exception of one, which seems to be very complicated and ultimately ineffectual.
If you’re wanting a meal, I would recommend the burgers. They are actually quite good and decently priced considering how they try to serve higher-class type food here. The meat/cheese trays are small and not worth the money unless you’re in to that sort of thing, then it may be worth it for a try. I pretty consistently get the fries when I go just for a snack and some beers.
There is usually a long wait to get in, which is no big surprise because the place is very small and they server world-class beer. The beer alone is worth the wait, trust me on that one.
The thing about this place that really gets me, is that they absolutely refuse to separate checks for people. If you come as a group or sit at the same table, you’ll all have to sit around and figure out how to divide the bill. It’s not an amazingly complicated task, but try it after everyone has had a few drinks. Someone almost always feels like they paid extra… To me this should be standard customer service at any place that encourages people to come in.
In addition, if you’re at a table with a group and a couple of your friends happen to walk in and sit in the bar, its frowned upon to go talk to them. Some of the employees there have either come with, or adopted a go-to-hell attitude which seems to fit the vibe they are trying for. I like it, up until the point where it effects customer service.
BEER
They have very good beer in my opinion. There’s a large variety of beer for all kinds of different drinkers. I personally don’t like beers that taste too much like a Christmas tree. So I go for Jinx Proof, Gumballhead, Robert the Bruce, and Alpha King. Some are a bit too hoppy for me but I’ll have one from time to time.
I’m a huge fan of meads. I was actually introduced to my favorite mead (Viking Blod by Dansk Mjod) while I was up there having a few beers with some friends. So don’t count them out for having something other than beer for you to try.
All-in-all, the pro’s outweigh the cons when it comes to this brew pub, and I would recommend anyone to stop in for a couple, and maybe some dinner.
Just come expecting to do some math at the end!
