“The Man in Black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.

So begins Book I of Stephen King’s iconic fantasy series, The Dark Tower. Part sci-fi novel, part futuristic dystopia, part spaghetti Western, and part high fantasy vision, The Gunslinger tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is tracking an enigmatic magician known only as the man in black.

Following his quarry across the demon-infested Mohaine Desert, Roland confronts a mad preacher woman and her murderous flock, holds palaver with a speaking demon, and finally befriends a young boy from our world named Jake Chambers. Jake joins Roland on his quest, but while Roland travels with his young companion Jake, the man in black travels with Roland’s soul in his pocket.

The 2003 revised editon of The Gunslinger contains the essay “On Being Nineteen (And a few other things)” by Stephen.” -Viking Press 2003

Stephen King Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger (or the whole series for that matter) is a great story that I would recommend to anyone looking to get into a great fantasy epic and stay there a while.

I myself love audiobooks for their ability to get you into a story while allowing you to still be a functional individual. Reading a book, to me, seems too all-encompassing.

While I can’t get more in-depth with the story than the publishers excerpt without spoiling it for you, I can tell you that it is well worth the listen.

Narrator: George Guidall

Narrator: George Guidall

This book was narrated by George Guidall and this guy has the perfect voice for this kind of story – the type of voice you’d expect to hear from a gunslinger. George has done many other books, not just including books in this series, that you may want to check out if you like these.

Check this book out – you can get it at Audible.com

The next book in the series is The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three.
